Express Entry Category-Based Draws 2026: Occupations

Express Entry Category-Based Draws 2026: Occupations In Demand

One mistake shows up in applications from every corner of the world. Someone spots a job title on the Express Entry category-based draws 2026 lists that looks like their own and assumes the question is settled. A welder in Poland, a nurse in Kenya and an aircraft technician in Brazil can all fall into it the same way.

The system doesn’t read job titles. It reads five-digit occupation codes, and for most categories it now expects a full 12 months of experience in one of them. Plenty of advice still circulating quotes six months, which was last year’s standard.

What follows is a seven-step method for checking your eligibility properly, wherever you’re applying from. You’ll find every occupation currently listed with its code, plus an honest look at which categories have been drawing this year and which have stayed quiet.

Key Takeaways

  • The 2026 system runs ten categories. Half of them are new this year, and three of those new ones only count work done inside Canada.
  • For occupation-based categories, you need 12 months of full-time work, or the part-time equivalent, in one listed occupation within the last three years. Breaks between jobs are allowed.
  • Healthcare, STEM, trades, education and transport accept experience gained in any country.
  • Seven categories had their own rounds through early September 2026. STEM, education and researchers had not been drawn at all.
  • French-language rounds have been the most generous route this year, both in the number of invitations and in how low the scores went.

Know How A Category Round Chooses Candidates

Think of Express Entry as a waiting room rather than a door. On its own, it grants nothing. It holds the profiles of people who qualify for one of three federal programs: the Federal Skilled Worker Program, the Federal Skilled Trades Program or the Canadian Experience Class. From time to time, IRCC invites some of those people to apply for permanent residence. [internal link: Express Entry eligibility for FSW, FST and CEC]

In an ordinary round, the logic is simple: the highest scores win. A category round works in two stages. First, it sets aside everyone who doesn’t meet the category’s condition. It then ranks whoever remains by Comprehensive Ranking System (CRS) score and invites from the top down until the round is full.

The effect can be dramatic. A candidate who would never beat the entire pool can land near the top once the field shrinks to people in one profession or with one language skill.

Two practical realities sit behind every category.

  • Rounds follow need, not a calendar. Each category has a yearly invitation goal, and invitations issued through other types of rounds count toward it. If those other rounds already bring in enough eligible people, a dedicated category round may never be held.
  • Equal scores are settled by the clock. When several candidates sit exactly on the cut-off, the profile submitted first receives the invitation.

Identify Your NOC 2021 Code Through Your Real Duties

Canada classifies jobs using the 2021 version of the National Occupational Classification. Each occupation has a five-digit code and a TEER level (Training, Education, Experience and Responsibilities) running from 0 to 5. Only TEER 0, 1, 2 and 3 occupations count for Express Entry.

International applicants stumble here more than anywhere else, and it’s rarely their fault. Job titles don’t travel well between countries.

  • An “engineer” in one country may do work that Canada classifies as a technologist role.
  • A “nurse” can mean a university-trained professional in one health system and a care assistant in another.
  • “Manager” can describe anyone from a shift supervisor to a chief executive.

So set the title aside and work from your duties:

  • Write down the responsibilities that took up most of your working time, in plain language, before looking at any classification.
  • Search the NOC 2021 database with words from that list and shortlist the two or three closest codes.
  • Read each code’s lead statement and main duties carefully. Pick the one that describes the bulk of what you actually did.
  • Ask for reference letters that describe your duties in similar terms, with weekly hours, pay and exact employment dates.

If your letters aren’t in English or French, plan for translations as well.

The idea behind these categories is retention. They reward people who have already proven themselves inside Canada’s own workplaces.

A surgeon with twenty years of practice abroad and none in Canada won’t fit the physicians category. That same surgeon can still qualify under healthcare, which accepts foreign experience in the identical codes.

The senior manager codes are demanding in their own way. They’re meant for executives who set organisation-wide direction and oversee other managers, not for people whose title simply includes the word “manager”.

Skilled Military Recruits

This category doesn’t follow the occupation-list model. To be considered, a candidate needs all of the following:

  • Service in a recognised foreign military, with at least ten years of uninterrupted service
  • Training and experience that match NOC 40042, 42102 or 43204
  • A full-time job offer from the Canadian Armed Forces, arranged through its recruiting system, lasting at least three years
  • A post-secondary credential of two years or more, with an equivalency assessment if it was earned abroad

French-Language Proficiency

No occupation is required. What counts is a French test result at level 7 or higher on the Canadian French benchmark scale (NCLC) in all four skills: reading, writing, listening and speaking.

Native French speakers and people who learned French later compete on exactly the same footing.

Measure Your 12 Months Correctly

Even applicants with the right occupation often miscount this step.

Canada treats 30 hours a week as full-time. Twelve months at that pace comes to 1,560 hours. Part-time work is counted by hours rather than calendar months, so 15 hours a week over 24 months also reaches the target.

Category GroupExperience RequiredWhere It Must Be Gained
Healthcare, STEM, trades, education, transport12 months in one listed occupation within 3 yearsAny country
Physicians, senior managers, researchers12 months in one listed occupation within 3 yearsCanada only
Skilled military recruits10+ years of continuous foreign service and a CAF job offerRecognised foreign military
French-language proficiencyNo occupation requirementNot applicable

Three rules decide whether your months actually count.

They must all sit in one code. Seven months as a medical sonographer plus five months as a radiation technologist won’t combine, even though both appear on the healthcare list.

Gaps are fine for the category. Moving between contracts or taking time off doesn’t break the category requirement. The Federal Skilled Worker Program is stricter: it needs one continuous year in a single occupation within the past ten years. Your profile has to pass both tests separately.

The window keeps sliding forward. Months that count this spring may fall outside the three-year range by next spring. If your oldest qualifying work is near that edge, time matters.

Program rules still apply on top of the category rules. The Canadian Experience Class, for example, doesn’t count self-employment or work done while studying full-time.

Line Up Your CRS Score Against 2026 Round Results

A category on paper and a category that actually invites people are two very different things. Here’s how each one has performed through the round held on September 4, 2026.

For context, Canadian Experience Class rounds this year have required between 507 and 523 points. Across all 53 rounds of every type up to early September, about 126,000 invitations went out, and slightly more than half came through category rounds.

Reading the numbers honestly:

  • French is the standout. French-language rounds alone produced about four in every ten invitations this year, at scores roughly 100 points below the Canadian Experience Class. For a candidate in any country who can reach the required level, few changes deliver more.
  • Healthcare has been steady. Candidates scoring in the high 460s or 470s have had three realistic opportunities, with foreign experience fully accepted.
  • STEM has gone quiet. No STEM-only round has taken place since April 2024. Invitations to STEM-eligible candidates also fell sharply between 2023 and 2025, from roughly 24,000 to under 6,000.
  • Very low physician scores tell a narrow story. They reflect how few people meet the Canadian-practice requirement, not a softer standard for everyone else.

Prepare A Backup Route Early

Relying on a single category is a hope, not a plan. How you build your second route depends on how far you are from a realistic score.

Short of the mark by about 20 points or less: a stronger language result is usually the quickest fix. Higher benchmarks raise your score in two ways: through the core language points and through combinations with your education and foreign work experience. A partner’s language result or an assessment of a second qualification can also close a small gap.

Short by 40 points or more: bigger changes are needed.

  • French: getting to level 7 in all four skills takes serious, sustained study. The payoff is access to the lowest regular scores in the system this year.
  • Provincial nomination: a nomination adds 600 points, which puts you comfortably above the scores needed in nomination-based rounds. Each province and territory runs its own streams with its own priorities.

Already working in Canada: each extra month in a listed occupation builds your position. It keeps you competitive for Canadian Experience Class rounds and can make you eligible for the Canada-only talent categories if your role fits.

Keep one boundary in mind: Express Entry doesn’t cover Quebec. Anyone who intends to settle in that province goes through Quebec’s own selection programs.

What 2027 Could Mean For Your Plans

Canada reviews its categories every year, and a public consultation on the 2027 lineup wrapped up at the start of September 2026. The government signalled two directions. It may narrow the categories built around labour shortages, and it may create stronger pathways for highly skilled international talent. French-speaking immigration outside Quebec is expected to remain a priority, with admission targets for French speakers rising each year through 2028.

None of this is final. Still, the direction points one way: a plan that depends entirely on a single shortage list carries more risk next year than it does now.

Stay Invitation-Ready And Act Quickly When One Arrives

Rounds are never announced in advance, so preparation has to happen before an invitation arrives.

While your profile sits in the pool

  • A profile stays active for up to 12 months. If yours expires without an invitation, submit a fresh one straight away.
  • Language test results stay valid for two years. An expired result removes your eligibility.
  • Update your profile whenever something changes, such as a new test score, a new job or a month of experience that pushes you over a threshold.

Once an invitation lands

You have 60 days to submit a complete application for permanent residence. That time goes quickly, especially if your documents come from several countries. Start early on:

  • Reference letters from every employer whose experience you’re claiming, detailing duties, hours, salary and dates
  • Police certificates from each country where you lived for six months or longer in a row since turning 18
  • Proof of settlement funds, which is usually required for Federal Skilled Worker and Federal Skilled Trades applicants
  • A valid educational credential assessment for qualifications earned outside Canada

At the final review, officers check your category eligibility as well as your program eligibility. If your reference letters don’t support the code you claimed, the application can be refused. A finding of misrepresentation can block you from applying again for five years.

Your Action Plan For The Next Seven Days

  • Day 1: Write out your real duties for each job and search the NOC 2021 database for matching codes.
  • Day 2: Build a simple spreadsheet of hours worked per occupation, with start and end dates.
  • Day 3: Contact former and current employers to request detailed reference letters.
  • Day 4: Check the date on your language test and book a new one if it expires within six months.
  • Day 5: Research provincial streams or French study options as your backup route.
  • Day 7: Review your Express Entry profile and make sure every qualifying role appears in your work history.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is Software Development Part Of The 2026 STEM Category?

No. The current STEM list has 11 occupations: architecture and science managers, cybersecurity specialists, five engineering roles, three engineering technologist roles, and insurance agents and brokers. Software engineers, software developers and data scientists aren’t on it, so they usually do better through Canadian experience, a provincial nomination or French.

Is A Canadian Job Offer Required For Category Rounds?

Not for nine of the ten categories. Those depend on past work experience or French test results. The only exception is skilled military recruits, which requires a full-time offer of at least three years from the Canadian Armed Forces.

Does Work Experience Gained Outside Canada Count?

Yes, for healthcare and social services, STEM, trades, education and transport. Foreign experience qualifies as long as it’s in a listed occupation and falls within the last three years. The physicians, senior managers and researchers categories only accept work done in Canada.

Can I Be Eligible For Several Categories At Once?

Yes. A French-speaking pharmacist, for example, could qualify for both French-language and healthcare rounds, and for Canadian Experience Class rounds with Canadian work history. Candidates don’t pick a category. Each round automatically checks every profile against its own rules.

How Long Do Language Test Results Stay Valid?

Two years from the date of the test. Your results must be valid when you create your profile and still valid when you submit your permanent residence application. If they expire while you wait, your profile stops being eligible.

Does A Category Invitation Mean I Can Work In My Profession Right Away?

Not necessarily. An invitation relates to immigration eligibility, not professional licensing. Regulated professions such as medicine, nursing, engineering, teaching and many skilled trades still require recognition from the relevant provincial or territorial body before you can practise in Canada.
